Challenges:

Umbreit chose to further automate its central warehouse at the Bietigheim-Bissingen location and at the same time expand its portfolio in the business area of the intermediate book trade by offering additional logistics services. Challenges of this project included:

• The need for additional automation solutions
• The demand for more robust logistics services

Solutions Implemented:

G. Umbreit set up a sorter and a sorter controller, connecting the new components to the existing system. It implemented:

• Feed sorter with six workstations
• 60 terminals
• Two NOK terminals
• Conveyor system

Benefits:

The centerpiece of the intralogistics expansion is the individual distribution of book titles by a sorter that addresses the delivery requirements of the various stores and adjusts the distribution for each individual shelf. Additional benefits include:

• Capacity increased to 6,000 books per hour at up to 3kg
• Low system maintenance requirements
